But then something pressed into the side of the tent again. John started to worry that maybe this was a mother bear with cubs, which can be very, very dangerous. But he smacked the side of the tent again anyway, and instead of hitting something soft, like the last two times, he hit something hard. As soon as he did, a shadow came down over the top of the tent, and it was a silhouette of a hand that was about twice the width of a human hand, with a thumb and very thick fingers.

And John knew that this was no bear.

Bears don’t have hands. They definitely don’t have thumbs, not like ours.

Uh-oh.

John scrambled to get out of his sleeping bag, to see what was outside his tent. His movement sent the creature running back into the nearby trees, so he couldn’t see it. But there was no way he was going to climb back inside that tent again. He grabbed his sleeping bag and went to sit by the fire he’d made earlier. And then he waited and waited. He could still hear it breathing, but it wasn’t getting any closer. He didn’t think it was a bear anymore, but he didn’t have a clue what it actually was.

“The thought of Bigfoot did not even enter my mind at that point,” he told me.

Can you imagine what that would be like? All alone out there in the woods with some heavy-breathing, unknown creature lurking nearby? I’m sure I’d be really scared and nervous. There’s no way I could ever fall asleep. Except maybe after a while, when things are quiet and the fire is warm and relaxing and I’m really tired after a long day of hiking . . . That’s exactly what happened to John, and he started to doze off.

He wasn’t sure how long he slept, but he woke with a jolt when something hit the ground next to him. He opened his eyes and by the light of the moon he saw what he thought was a pine cone fall out of a tree. Then, just seconds later, another one came flying out of the woods at him. Then another. And another. Over the next ten minutes, more than twenty pine cones landed in the fire and all around him. Something was throwing pine cones at him, and he definitely didn’t think it was a bear. At this point, John didn’t know what to do, so he just stayed still. He hunkered down with his sleeping bag over his head until eventually the creature shuffled off and left him alone.

As the sun came up, John looked all around the campsite to see if he could figure out what kind of animal had been harassing him all night. He didn’t find any footprints or any other clues. But when he got back to his office a few days later, he told a few people about the mysterious attack, including his boss. And it was John’s boss who put the idea of Bigfoot into John’s head.
